Detection Methodology
Our detection methodology explains how we approach bed bug identification, monitoring, and prevention research — and why we emphasize calm, layered detection over single-method certainty.
Layered Detection
No single tool confirms bed bugs with certainty. We recommend a layered approach that combines visual inspection, passive monitors (interceptors), mattress encasements as monitoring aids, and — when needed — professional or K9 inspection.
Early Detection First
Early detection dramatically improves outcomes. We prioritize tools and routines that catch activity early: interceptors under bed legs, regular mattress seam checks, and consistent post-travel inspections.
Why Visual Inspection Has Limits
Early infestations are easy to miss visually. Bed bugs hide in seams, cracks, and crevices, and signs can be subtle. That’s why passive monitoring over time is so valuable — it captures evidence visual checks alone may miss.
Bites Are Not Confirmation
Bite reactions vary widely between people and can resemble other insect bites or skin conditions. Bites alone cannot confirm bed bugs. We treat bites as one possible signal among many, never as proof.
When to Call a Professional
If you suspect an active infestation, professional inspection often outperforms DIY-only methods. K9 detection and licensed pest professionals can confirm presence and guide treatment safely.
What We Avoid
We do not provide infestation certainty scores, medical diagnoses, or unsafe extermination instructions. Our methodology is educational and prevention-focused.
